Education Program

Come back to this webpage often! We’ll be adding more information about the schedule, presentations, speakers, and idea exchanges as each becomes available.

APWA's goal for the PWX Education Program is to create an event where you're able to make meaningful connections and discover and produce game-changing insights and solutions.

APWA knows the challenges and opportunities facing public works are unprecedented. The speed of social and technological change places an enormous responsibility on you to proactively provide and maintain the infrastructure needed for your community’s growth and well-being.

You need a PWX experience that will help you gain new perspectives, exchange ideas and participate in important and thought-provoking discussions on the shape of things to come.

We need you to arrive in Kansas City prepared to ask the essential questions and share your views and ideas. Start thinking now about:
  • What challenge are you facing that a solution seems out-of-reach?
  • What leadership qualities, skills, and resources are needed to lead and manage the modern public works department?
  • What innovations and solutions has your agency implemented that would help the whole profession provide better public works services?
  • What are your blind spots? Are you open to fresh and broader perspectives?
  • What is your vision for the future of public works?
  • Can innovation be learned?
  • What’s coming? Do you have any hunches or visions for what the next technological advancement will be?
  • How should we be providing public works infrastructure and services that are resilient and sustainable?
  • Don’t stop there – what else is on your mind? We’re counting on you to show up eager to ask smart questions and to join your colleagues in imagining the future your communities deserve!
APWA is committed to helping you learn from each other, and the 2018 PWX Education Program will include opportunities for you to make intentional connections with each other.

We’ll still cover the basic public works interest areas including: leadership, professional development, emergency planning and response, streets/roads construction and maintenance, traffic engineering and active transportation solutions, engineering and technology, water/wastewater, stormwater, fleet services, solid waste management, facilities construction and maintenance, grounds maintenance and urban forestry, sustainability and resiliency, and utility and right-of-way management.

And, don’t worry – for those of you wanting more structured learning, we’ll still have plenty of traditional conference offerings too. BUT – the profession needs step outside of its box – and APWA’s mission is to provide you with the tools needed to mobilize the collective wisdom of the public works profession.

PWX will evolve with each succeeding year. In 2018, we’ll be trying out more new formats, and we’ll continue to experiment with other trending ideas based on your feedback and recommendations.

CEU Credits

.1 CEU = 1 PDH (Professional Development Hour)
APWA’s education sessions and exhibit showcase presentations are eligible for CEU credit. Your registration covers the processing fee. APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs.

The Professional Development Hour (PDH) is a term established by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) “Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines” for Professional Engineers (PE). In these guidelines, NCEES defines the equivalency between CEUs and PDHs as: 0.1 CEU (1 hour of instruction) = 1 PDH. (Important note to Florida and New York Professional Engineers: APWA is an approved Florida Board of Professional Engineers provider of Continuing Education. The State of New York recognizes APWA as an approved training provider by virtue of APWA’s standing as an IACET Authorized Provider of CEUs.)

APWA’s education sessions and exhibit showcase presentations are eligible for CEU credit. Your registration covers the processing fee. APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs.

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally accepted measure of participation in continuing education activities. It is a valuable tool for showing employers and professional licensing authorities that you are adding new skills and staying current with today’s ever-changing workplace. APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education & Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs. This designation demonstrates that APWA’s Continuing Education programs comply with recognized standards for program development and learning outcomes and are recognized by multiple state licensing boards and certifying bodies.

AGAIN THIS YEAR—You can earn CEUs for attending the Exhibitor Solution Theater presentations on the exhibit floor!

CEUs will be awarded for attending PWX education sessions, workshops, Exhibitor Solution Theater presentations and workshop/tours.

APWA uses an electronic system to track attendance at education sessions. The PWX name badge has a bar code on it that contains identifying information specific to each person. To obtain CEUs for the sessions you attend, you MUST have your badge electronically scanned by the room monitors at the end of each session. You must attend the entire session or workshop to be eligible to receive CEU credits.

Within four weeks of the conference, APWA will enter all of your data into the system and then send you an e-mail notice with instructions for downloading your CEU Transcript from the APWA CEU web page. The fee for obtaining a CEU Transcript is included in your PWX full and daily registration fees!
